Teens drinking hand sanitizer to get drunk

Posted:

LOS ANGELES (WKOW) -- Public health experts are warning parents that some teens are drinking hand sanitizer to get drunk.

Within the past few months, a half dozen teenagers in Southern California have been treated for alcohol poisoning after drinking the liquid.

Now, health officials tell the "LA Times" they're worried this might become a dangerous trend. Liquid hand sanitizer is 62-percent ethyl alcohol. And, of course, it's easy for teens to buy at the store.

Experts say parents should buy foam hand sanitizer because it's harder to distill the alcohol and monitor the liquid like they do medications.
