Mom who lost legs in tornado walks for first time

Posted:

HENRYVILLE, Ind. (WKOW) -- The Indiana mother who lost her legs while protecting her children from tornadoes in March is walking again.

Stephanie Decker took her first steps with her first prosthesis on Wednesday. She lost parts of both of her legs when an EF-4 tornado struck her home in Henryville, Indiana. Decker says she's embracing the change instead of trying to get down about losing her legs.

"I don't feel insecure," Decker said. "I don't feel, you know, threatened by not having my legs anymore."

In the coming days, Decker will practice standing and walking. She's expected to be fitted for the other prosthetic in the coming weeks.
