SAN DIEGO (AP) -- The San Diego County medical examiner's office has ruled Junior Seau's death a suicide.
The autopsy says Seau died of a gunshot wound to the chest.
The medical examiner's office says it is awaiting a decision by the family on whether to turn over Seau's brain to unidentified outside researchers for study.
Seau died Wednesday in his home in suburban Oceanside.
Those who knew and loved Junior Seau say they didn't see this coming.
Like many of Seau's friends, former Chargers safety Miles McPherson was still trying to comprehend the death of the former NFL linebacker the day after his body was found inside his home.
McPherson says Seau's death is puzzling.
Seau's ex-wife, Gina, told The Associated Press that while Seau sustained concussions during his playing career, she had no idea if they somehow contributed to his death.
