Mother's Day always has a tremendous impact on the economy, and that impact is even bigger than usual this year.

The National Retail Federation estimates the average American will spend $152 on Mother's Day gifts, which is about $12 more than last year.

In spite of continued economic uncertainty in recent years, Mother's Day spending has gone up every year since 2009.

Based on a consumer spending survey conducted last month, the estimated total economic impact of Mother's Day this year will be $18.6 billion.
