YouTube video spices up Senate recall race

LAKE MILLS (WKOW) -- Republican Senator Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau) told the Wisconsin State Journal over the weekend that he doesn't believe challenger Lori Compas (D-Fort Atkinson) was the driving force behind his recall, suggesting either her husband or some unions put her up to it.

Those comments prompted Compas to fire back in very atypical fashion.

Compas made a YouTube video with her family, showing her acting like a clueless housewife who does whatever her husband says.

Compas says it's meant to be a funny commentary on what she considers to be disrespectful comments from Sen. Fitzgerald.

"The policies that he has enacted over the past year have been pretty disrespectful to women, so, it's just more of what we've come to expect from him," said Compas.

Sen. Fitzgerald's campaign would only respond by saying that Compas's assertion that he has no respect for women is so over-the-top it doesn't even deserve a response.

As a 17-year incumbent, Fitzgerald is seen as a heavy favorite in the recall race, with one mid-April poll showing him holding a 14 point lead over Compas.

But Compas is undeterred, pounding the pavement in cities across the 13th Senate District just about everyday.

Compas told 27 News she believes there are a lot of independent voters in the district and that an issue like this one, could help her a lot.

"This is a district where people really tend to vote on the person more than the party, so, it's just a matter of getting out and convincing people that I'm the best candidate," said Compas.

And if Sen. Fitzgerald doesn't take Compas seriously, that's just fine with her.

"I hope he continues to underestimate me," said Compas.
