Madison College baseball team wins regional opener
MADISON, Wis. -- For the second straight tournament opener, the WolfPack trailed until the late innings before they mounted a rally in the seventh and eighth innings. Madison College scored three runs on four hits to down Oakton Community College, 3-2, in the first game of the Region Tournament.
The WolfPack trailed 6-0 until the seventh inning in their first game of the Sectional Tournament against College of Lake County and today, in the first game of the Region Tournament, the WolfPack trailed 2-0 heading into the seventh inning as well. In the bottom of the seventh inning today, Bryce Barsness singled to left field with two outs. Former Madison East athlete, Jake Page, then singled to left field to score Barsness for the WolfPack's first run of the game.
After Oakton's half of the inning the WolfPack started the bottom of the eighth with an Eric DuCharme walk. After one out and Ryan McShane reaching on an error by the Oakton thirdbasemen, Luke Maldonado reached on a fielder's choice scoring DuCharme. With the game tied 2-2 and two outs, Treysen Vavra came up big. Vavra hit a triple to right center, scoring Maldonado for the go ahead score.
Josh Jaro and Danny Sullivan combined for three outs in the top of the ninth and the WolfPack completed their comeback and won their first game of the 2012 NJCAA Region IV Tournament by the score of 3-2. Starter, Shane Adler, received his sixth win of the season pitching eight and two-thirds, giving up just one earned run and striking out four. Danny Sullivan earned his second save of the season by getting the final out.
Trey Vavra, Luke Maldonado, and Jake Page each had an RBI apiece in the victory. With the win, the WolfPack will play the winner of the second tournament game tomorrow at NOON. Oakton Community College will play at 9:00 AM tomorrow. For more tournament information visit region4tournament.com
