MADISON (WKOW) -- AAA expects about 34.8 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles during Memorial Day weekend, which is about 500,000 more travelers from this time last year.
There's some good news for drivers this weekend: it looks like gas prices won't reach $5/gal like some travel experts original predicted earlier this year…at least around the Madison area.
AAA says in Madison, the average price for a gallon of unleaded gas is $3.63. The statewide average is $3.71/gal, which AAA says is 13-cents lower than this time last year. The national average for a gallon of unleaded gas is $3.68.
There are several major road construction projects that may affect holiday travel, including the Mitchell interchange in Milwaukee County; Interstate 94 in Milwaukee, Kenosha and Eau Claire Counties; and U.S. 41 in Winnebago and Brown Counties.
