MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison-area kids count down the days until school is out and working parents have to figure out how to keep them supervised this summer.
A few weeks ago we talked about the daycare option in the Parenting Project. This is all about summer camps, and these too, can keep your kids educated and active all day, every day until they go back to school.
Even children who love school are itching to get their summer fun on and camps fill up quickly this time of year. Some of them are a great alternative for parents looking for someone to supervise their children while they're at work. Paul Vandervelde, Senior Executive Director of the Dane County YMCA Lussier Family West branch says, "It lasts all summer long and it's available early in the morning until parents are done with work."
You can get really specific, like summer swim lessons or drama camp. Or opt for a day-long camp. Madison School and Community Recreation and the Dane County YMCA both offer day camps that last the entire summer. These offer something new every day: sports, crafts, games, field trips and more.
Many now focus on health too, working to combat childhood obesity through good nutrition and physical activity. Vandervelde says like a lot of other camps, "We're going to keep them moving. They won't have the option to sit and be sedentary."
