WIAA state track & field: Day 1 wrap-up

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- High school track and field athletes could not have asked for a nicer day at opening day of the WIAA Track & Field Championships at UW-La Crosse on Friday.

And Platteville probably couldn't have asked much more from its 4x800 meter relay team.

The two-time defending champs in Division 2 were in last place one-quarter way through the race, but came back to win at just over 9 minutes, 21 seconds, missing the state record by 0.17 seconds.

In Division 1, three field athletes from the Madison area took home a gold medal.

Madison Memorial's Corinne Franz won the girls discus, throwing it 137 feet, 4 inches.

On the boys' side, Monona Grove's Theron Baumann won the shot put with no trouble. At 60 feet, 9.25 inches, Baumann beat the competition by more than 4 feet.

Janesville Craig's Calvin Coleman won the boys long jump at 22 feet, 3.5 inches.

Future Wisconsin linebacker Vince Biegel of Wisconsin Rapids won his heat in the 110m hurdles in 14.89 seconds, the fifth fastest time to land him a spot in Saturday's finals.
