HONG KONG (WKOW) -- Samsonite is recalling its "Tokyo Chic" luggage line worldwide and will replace handles on the bags after a Hong Kong consumer group found high levels of compounds linked to cancer.
The luggage maker says the bags are safe and that it's carrying out the recall in effort in order to allay consumer concerns.
Samsonite announced Monday it was pulling Tokyo Chic luggage from Hong Kong stores after the Hong Kong Consumer Council reported that a test sample had levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that were higher than recommended in voluntary guidelines.
The company says independent tests from German and Hong Kong laboratories that showed levels were "significantly lower" than the council's findings.
