TOWN OF SUN PRAIRIE (WKOW) -- Dane County authorities say a 44-year-old man was taken into custody Wednesday morning after a standoff in Sun Prairie.

Officials say the incident began around 3:00 a.m. when a caller reported a suspicious person in a neighborhood near CTH TT. Officials responded when another 911 call reported a man with a gun on Olin Way.

A man said he and a woman had been held hostage at gunpoint by the suspect, identified as Robert Simons. Both victims were able to escape, but they did not know the whereabouts of Simons.

As authorities searched for Simons, a reverse 911 call was placed to alert residents in the rural subdivision of the potential danger. Upon further investigation, officials located Simons inside the house. Because Simons was known to be armed, negotiators attempted to contact Simons. Once they got him on the phone, they were able to convince him to surrender peacefully, and the standoff ended around 7:45 a.m.

Residents in the area were then notified by another reverse 911 call that they were no longer in danger.

Highway TT was closed during the incident, but was later reopened to traffic.

Simons will be booked in to the Dane County Jail.
