Cooling centers and other weather-related advisories

The following are a list of advisories issued by local municipalities regarding continuing dry conditions, as well as extreme heat expected later this week. 

*Dane County Emergency Management offers tips on how to avoid heat-related illness and provides a list of cooling centers in Dane County. Look under the "press releases" link at www.cityofdane.com

*The Town of Blooming Grove has implemented a ban on all outdoor burning and strongly cautions against the use of any fireworks and sparklers (including legal fireworks) within the Township until further notice.

*Effective immediately, the Town of Dunn has declared a temporary burning ban due to very dry conditions.  All outdoor burning is prohibited until further notice, including, but not limited to, burn barrels, fire pits and all fireworks.

*The City of Beloit Fire Department has issued a ban on all outdoor burning, due to extremely dry conditions. The ban includes outdoor fireplaces and fire pits, as well as the use of all fireworks. You can call the fire department with any questions a (608) 364-6726.

*The Oregon Area Fire & EMS District has banned all burn permits and fireworks until the dry conditions in its district improve. The ban covers the Village of Oregon, portions of the Town of Rutland, Town of Dunn and the Town of Oregon. Anyone with questions can call (608) 835-5587.

*The Cottage Grove Volunteer Fire Department is instituting a burning ban for the Village and Town of Cottage Grove as of 9 a.m. Friday, June 29. The restriction includes: all fireworks (restricted and non-restricted), combustible materials in a burn pile or burn barrel or a grassy or wooded area, along with campfire and bonfires.

*Madison Water Utility is now asking its customers to conserve water. The utility points out is still able to meet demand, but would like to remind customers to be smart about how they use water in their home.

*The City of Sun Prairie is offering help to anyone who might need help finding a place to cool off during the hot days ahead this week. The city's police department will be available to help 24 hours a day. Sun PRairie residents can call (608) 837-7336, or dial 911.

*Several cooling centers will be open in Marquette County for the remainder of the week. For details, you can contact the county at (608) 297-3100.

* The Village of Poynette will have a cooling center at the Poynette Village Hall at 106 South Main Street. It will be open from Wednesday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Officials say it could stay open longer, if needed.

*The City of Columbus will have a cooling shelter at the Senior Center located at 125 N. Dickason Boulevard. It will be open through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

*Dane County Humane Society is warning pet owners to be on the lookout for signs of canine heat stroke. The signs include heavy panting, confusion and a lack of coordination, and vomiting and diarrhea. Learn more about canine heat stroke at www.giveshelter.org.

*Adams County offers cooling centers to the public through Friday. The cooling centers are at the Adams County Library located at 569 North Cedar Street, the Adams City Hall located at 101 North Main Street and Rome Town Hall located at 1156 Alpine Drive. *Green County offers cooling centers from Wednesday through Saturday. Click here, for a list of cooling locations in Green County.

*The Salvation Army offers a cooling location at Darbo Community Center located at 3030 Darbo Drive in Madison. The site is available Wednesday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Call the Madison Salvation Army at (608) 256-2321 for more information.

*Iowa County opened cooling shelters on Thursday. For details, log on to www.iowacounty.org or call 211.

*Fitchburg resident asked not to water: Due to the dry weather, water usage from lawn sprinkling has been much greater than average. In order to ensure that there is an ample supply of water reserved for fire protection and domestic use, the Fitchburg Utility District is asking that you do not sprinkle your lawn until
this dry period ends.

*Cooling center open in Shorewood Village Center till 9 p.m. Thursday.
