FITCHBURG (WKOW) -- The Dane County Medical Examiner says 25 year-old Samuel John Harris of Dubuque, Iowa was the man killed at a Fitchburg apartment complex early Tuesday evening.
Autopsy results released Wednesday show Harris was shot to death.
Wednesday afternoon, Fitchburg Police were still gathering evidence at the Fairway Apartments on the corner of Leopold Way and Post Road.
That's where they had initially responded at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to find Harris unresponsive and without a pulse.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Fitchburg Police have yet to say if there are any suspects in Harris's death, although they spent hours interviewing people in nearby apartment complexes seeking more information.
Many of those neighbors have no idea what may have happened.
"I really don't know what the truth is," said Tray Jackson.
"It's scary, surprising, but its Fitchburg, you know....never know what's gonna go on over here," said Nigeria Nicholson.
Two of Samuel Harris's family members in Dubuque told 27 News by phone Wednesday afternoon that they didn't even know he was in Dane County Tuesday night or why he would be.
The family said they won't have any further comment until police make an arrest in the case.
Samuel Harris did have a criminal record in Iowa, but nothing that involved serious or violent crimes.
Most of the cases involved traffic or underage use of tobacco or alcohol.

Lt. Chad Brecklin with the Fitchburg Police Department tells 27 News that when officers responded to the scene at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, they discovered a man in the hallway who was not breathing. Officers attempted to resuscitate him but were unable to revive him. The Dane County Medical Examiner's Office later declared the man dead.
Authorities are treating the death as a homicide, but would not comment on whether they had a suspect, saying it is too early in the investigation to release that information.
Brecklin says they are not releasing the man's name, and are not able to comment on the cause of death. There will be an autopsy conducted Wednesday morning.
Fitchburg police were assisted by the Dane County Sheriff's Office and Madison police. District Attorney Ismael Ozanne arrived on scene after several hours. Brecklin says that is routine procedure for a crime of this nature.
People who live in the area told 27 News that they believe the neighborhood is getting increasingly more dangerous. The body was found at a building right across the street from Leopold Elementary School.
The owner of the apartment building says he has not had any trouble with tenants, and says he believes it is a crime that could have happened anywhere.
