Wis. recount trends in Dem challenger's favor - WKOW 27: Madison, WI Breaking News, Weather and Sports

RACINE (WKOW) -- It does not look like Republican state Sen. Van Wanggaard will receive enough votes to win his recall election.

Unless major errors are uncovered in the next few days, recount results posted Friday show that with 80 percent of ballots counted, Wanggaard has a net gain of 20 votes. However, Democratic challenger John Lehman still is ahead by more than 800 votes.

The recount is expected to finish by the Monday deadline. If it does, both sides will have until July 10 to challenge the results in court.

Republicans have hinted they may file a lawsuit. During the recount it was found that an unspecified number of voters who registered at the polls failed to sign the appropriate poll book.

The state elections board says the error was an administrative oversight, not voting fraud.
