13-year-old charged as adult in attempted killing

MADISON (WKOW) -- A 13-year-old boy was charged as an adult in Dane County court for allegedly nearly killing his 21-year-old brother.

A court commissioner set bail for Elijah Canada at $20,000.

Canada is charged with attempted first degree intentional homicide.

Court documents show Canada stabbed his brother, Alex Griffin, after play-fighting escalated into a serious confrontation on Saturday, July 7.

According to a criminal complaint against Canada, a doctor told officers that Griffin could have died, had it not been for the close proximity of a hospital to the scene of the violence.

Records state the attack took place in an apartment on Fordhem Street.

The criminal complaint states Canada told officers he only stabbed his brother after Griffin taunted him and dared him to stab him.

Although Canada will not turn 14 until December, records list him as 6'1 and 278 pounds.

Even though Canada has been charged as an adult, a sheriff's officials says he remains in juvenile custody.
