MILWAUKEE (WKOW) – The Wisconsin Supreme Court says a rural town cannot force water quality standards on a livestock farm that are tougher than the state requires.
Magnolia, about 30 miles south of Madison, accused a farmer of polluting the water supply with manure from Larson Acres' cows. The decision Wednesday means the town cannot demand that the 2,900-cow farm take extra steps to control pollution.
Similar cases have been filed in six other Midwestern states. Wisconsin's is believed to be the first to reach a state supreme court.
