Doctors see increase in younger victims of drug overdoses
MADISON (WKOW) – Doctors say victims of overdoses are getting younger and the number is increasing dramatically, even in rural areas.
Dr. Kyle Martin, St. Mary's Hospital emergency physician, says he typically sees at least one patient each night who has overdosed on heroin or prescription drugs.
"Heroin is one of the more addictive drugs. It gives people a sense of euphoria and it causes your breathing to slow and stop in some cases. It also makes you sleepy and can cause you to pass out and not be aware of anything anymore," Dr. Martin says.
He says many of the victims he treats are in their teens to early twenties.
