CROSS PLAINS (WKOW) -- Several fire departments near Madison put out a fire in a wheat field near Cross Plains.
Authorities say the wind was driving the flames toward some buildings but they contained it before anything was damaged. "The firefighters were quick responding and the farmers in the area were very helpful in having knockdown, " said Cross Plains Fire Chief Dale Lochner.
In all, about five acres burned.
Lochner says the fire may have been started by an equipment malfunction or a spark from a stone being picked up by a chopper.
No one was hurt.
Lochner said crews were mindful of staying hydrated while fighting the fire in the heat.
