Changes to how Wisconsin measures test scores

WKOW (WKOW) -- The State Department of Public Instruction releases a new, tougher grading system for reading and math tests.

This is the plan the state came up with after getting a waiver from parts of the No Child Left Behind Act.

The state Department of Public Instruction released this new measurement on Tuesday.

The state looked at how students did with these new standards. The preliminary results show that nearly 36 percent of all tested students are proficient in reading and 48 percent are proficient in math.

These numbers are lower than under the old standards, but the DPI says this doesn't reflect a difference in students' abilities. It reflects higher standards.
