UW's Ahmed excited for his Olympics debut

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- Wisconsin track athlete Mohammed Ahmed will soon make his Olympic debut in London, competing for Team Canada in the 10-thousand meter run. It's a pretty remarkable feat for Ahmed, as not too long ago Canada listed Ahmed as only a 2016 "Olympic hopeful."

Now he's competing in 2012, after meeting the olympic standard at a meet at Stanford in April, finishing the 10-thousand meters in 27:34.64. Ahmed says he's going into the Olympics as an underdog, but he still has high hopes.

"This is very exciting. I've been waiting for this for a very, very long time ever since I've started running and realizing i could actually do this as a career," Ahmed said. "Anything could happen. I could be destined to be the winner, I don't know. I'm just going out there to enjoy it and not put any pressure on myself and get experience for the future championships, Olympics, wherever the adventure leads me to."
