CRYSTAL LAKE (WKOW) – The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is mourning the loss of a graduate who was killed in the Aurora, Colorado shooting.
John Larimer was a Navy cryptologist based at Buckley Air Force Base. The 27-year-old grew up in Crystal Lake, Illinois, a Chicago suburb.
UW-Whitewater has posted that Larimer was a 2008 graduate and that he double majored in political science and history of its Facebook page. The college also says its thoughts are with Larimer's family and friends during this difficult time.
ABC News reports Larimer was shot while shielding his girlfriend from gunfire. He was with a group of sailors at the movie.
Military personnel were seen going to the family's home to give them more detail about what happened to Larimer and console the grieving family.
Larimer's brother was working with the Navy to bring his 27-year-old brother's body home to Chicago, reported the Chicago Sun-Times.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Larimer's aunt Karen Lavin made a couple remarks after hearing of her nephew's death. "He was a wonderful young man," said Lavin. "What a terrible, terrible loss this is for everyone who knew him."
The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Larimer's other aunt, Randee Larimer, will miss him greatly. "John was only 27 with an incredible life waiting for him," said Randee Larimer. "He will be remembered by a large close family and countless friends. John had incredible mind, a rapier wit, and quiet gentleness that will be greatly missed by all who knew him."
