Presidential campaigns focus on Wisconsin

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- Several Republican lawmakers traveled across Wisconsin Sunday to gain support for presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Meanwhile, President Obama supporters canvassed neighborhoods statewide. For both Republicans and Democrats, any campaign time before November 6 could mean precious votes.

In Janesville, Congressman Paul Ryan and Senator Ron Johnson made their case for Mitt Romney. Both criticized Obama's record in office and urged those at the rally to vote for the former Massachusetts governor.

Recent polls show Obama with a slight lead in Wisconsin. "Wisconsin is a toss up state. Typically, it isn't always considered that, but it is this time because I think Wisconsinites know that we need to go in a different direction and these policies are failing us," Ryan said.

Congressman Ryan has been named as a possible running mate for Romney, but he's not giving anything away. "I just don't think it helps the Romney campaign to feed into any of this speculation so I just don't comment about it," he told 27 News.

In Madison, Obama supporters said they're focusing on a grassroots effort to gain votes. "It's a really strong effort here and very much just volunteers donating a couple of hours on a Sunday afternoon and knocking on doors," state Senator Jon Erpenbach said. According to Erpenbach, 1,500 volunteers door to door throughout the state.

"Wisconsin remains pretty strong, it wasn't even part of the mix in 2008 and we wouldn't like it to be in 2012. That's why we're out on the doors this weekend and will be next weekend and so on," Erpenbach said.
