FITCHBURG (WKOW) -- Fitchburg firefighters were involved Wednesday in a different type of rescue: raising money in hopes of speeding research into debilitating neuromuscular diseases.
Firefighters gathered at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at the corner of Seminole Highway and County Road PD, equipped with firemen's boots. Passing motorists participated in "Fill the Boot," with donations to benefit the southwestern chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
MDA provides grants to medical researchers, stages a summer camp for children with neuromuscular disease, supports clinic doctors and nurses and their treatment of patients, and distributes information on the diagnosis, treatment and care of people with any one of forty neuromuscular diseases.
Fitchburg firefighters will again "Fill the Boot" Thursday and Friday at the same intersection from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.
The MDA Show of Strength Telethon will air on WKOW on Sunday, September 2 from 7:00 - 10:00 p.m.
