FITCHBURG (WKOW) -- A Fitchburg police official says a six-year-old girl was sleeping when her mother stabbed the child several times.
Lieutenant Todd Stetzer tells 27 News investigators are still looking for the 30-year-old mother's motive for stabbing her daughter.
Authorities said the girl is in critical condition at UW Hospital, but is expected to recover.
Stetzer says the mother also stabbed herself, and is also hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.
Stetzer tells 27 News officers from his department have had past contact with the mother, but said those contacts never involved the child's welfare. Stetzer says the previous calls were primarily for "disturbances" and took place at a previous address. "Relationship issues and things like that," Stetzer said.
At the Quarry Ridge Apartments, where the stabbing took place, next door neighbor Hunter Walhovd says he recently saw the woman, and she appeared calm and happy.
Walhovd says the woman doted on his dog.
Authorities say the woman is under police guard while hospitalized.
Stetzer says the girl's father does not live with his child and her mother, but is at the hospital with his daughter as she recovers.
