PLATTEVILLE (WKOW) -- Emergency crews in Platteville spent most of the day battling a large fire downtown that destroyed a building and forced families from their apartments.
Platteville fire fighters say they got a call around 10 Saturday morning that an apartment was on fire above the Chicago's Best Restaurant on 2nd Street. No one was in the building when crews arrived.
"We were able to rescue a dog and cat so at least the people were able to save their pets, but not much else," said Platteville Fire Department Public Information Officer Julie Loeffelholz.
The building was so severely damaged, crews worked to tear it down Saturday night. There were about 10 apartments in the building. The American Red Cross is helping the families affected.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
