Students in online charter schools struggle more to complete their degrees and repeat grades four times as often as students in traditional schools, according to the findings of a Gannett Media Wisconsin analysis.
But the analysis also points out charter schools have more than four times the staff turnover and teach more students with histories of academic struggles.
Standardized testing shows virtual charter school students trail traditional students in every subject but reading.
Wisconsin has had virtual charter schools for 10 years and the number has grown from four schools in 2003 to 28 for the 2012-13 school year.
