State superintendent outlines five year plan for better schools - WKOW 27: Madison, WI Breaking News, Weather and Sports

MADISON (WKOW) -- Kids head back to school next week and this year, State Superintendent Tony Evers is working to make sure every Wisconsin student graduates and is college or career ready.

Evers unveiled a plan this month called Agenda 2017. It oulines specific goals to hit in five years. Among them is increasing graduation rates from 85.7 percent to 92 percent. Dr. Evers also wants to increase career and college readiness to 67 percent, up from 32 percent.

Other goals are to close the graduation and career and college readiness gaps by 50 percent and increase the percentage of students scoring proficient in third grade reading and eighth grade math.

To achieve these goals, Dr. Evers says the state will focus on four areas: standards and instruction; assessments and data systems; school and educator effectiveness; and school finance reform.
