UPDATE: Officials identify UW-Madison student who drowned

MADISON (WKOW) -- The Dane County Medical Examiner's Office has released the name of the UW-Madison student who drowned Thursday morning.

The student is John "Vietnam" Nguyen, 19, of Chicago.

The Medical Examiner's Office says preliminary autopsy results show Nguyen died of accidental drowning.

Authorities were called to the 600 block of North Park Street near the UW Limnology Laboratory around 6:49 a.m. Nguyen was pulled from the water about 15 minutes after he went under.

MADISON (WKOW) -- UW-Madison says its mourning the loss of one of its students who died in an apparent drowning in Lake Mendota Thursday morning.

The Madison Fire Department's Lake Rescue Team responded to the incident around 6:49 a.m. Thursday near the Limnology Laboratory on the 600 block of North Park Street.

Officials say a group was swimming in Lake Mendota, when sources say, one person never came up. They say the victim had been under water for about 15 minutes before divers pulled him out of the water. The UW student was transported to UW Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Dean of Students Lori Berquam released a statement on the death on UW-Madison website.

"We're deeply saddened by this tragic loss, which comes just before the beginning of a new semester," Berquam said. "We will be reaching out to those in the university community who knew this student to offer all of our help, support and condolences."

The student's name and other information are not being released at this time until his family has been notified.

University of Wisconsin Police Sergeant Aaron Chapin says the victim died at the hospital.

Officials say a group was swimming in Lake Mendota, when sources say, one person never came up. They say the victim had been under water for about 15 minutes.

The victim was pulled from the water and was transported to UW Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Dane County Comm says the incident happened on the 600 block of North Park Street, by the Limnology Building, around 6:49 a.m. Thursday morning.

The victim's name and other information are not available until his family has been notified.

Officials say the victim had been under water for several minutes.

Dane County Comm says the incident happened on the 600 block of North Park Street in Madison around 6:50 a.m. Thursday morning. Authorities say a group was swimming in Lake Mendota, when sources say, one person never came up. 

The Dane County Sheriff's Department, Madison Fire, and Madison Police Department responded to the call. The victim was pulled from the water and was transported to a local hospital.

There's no information on the victim's condition.
