MADISON (WKOW) -- A Dane County judge ruled to temporarily prevent the use of dogs to hunt wolves.
Judge Peter Anderson says he expects the court to come to a final decision in the case before the wolf hunt starts in October, but in the meantime he didn't want to risk that dogs would be harmed during training.
Anderson sided with the coalition of humane societies looking to temporarily block the Department of Natural Resources from allowing the use of dogs to hunt wolves while the court looks at whether DNR needs to set up training requirements to prevent the death and injury of dogs.
We spoke with attorneys on both sides after the ruling.
"[Anderson] is bringing sanity to DNR. He is an independent set of eyes who looked at this and said, ‘DNR, you're just wrong,'" says Carl Sinderbrand, the plaintiff's attorney.
"We are disappointed by the ruling. We are going to look at it closely and talk to our attorneys at the Department of Justice and the department of the secretary's office and comply with the order as the judge ordered us to," says DNR attorney Tim Andryk.
DNR says the wolf hunt is still on and they've extended the application deadline to Sept.7.
The wolf hunt is scheduled to start on Oct.15.
Another hearing in this case is set to take place on Fri., Sept. 14.
