Wis. DNR: Bird migration to peak this month

MADISON (WKOW) – State wildlife officials said bird migration should peak over the next three weeks.

Bird experts with the Department of Natural Resources are telling bird watchers to be on the lookout for hummingbirds, warblers, vireos and thrushes.  Nighthawks and Chimney swifts will also be on the move during the evening hours.

DNR officials said the migration will likely by more stressful for birds this year because drought conditions have hurt their food sources.  The dry weather has reduced moisture dependent insect populations and prevented plants from flowering and dropping seeds.

The DNR said homeowners can help by providing birds with a water source and vegetation that provides fruit and shelter.
