Some Nebraska wildfire evacuation orders lifted

Posted:

OMAHA (WKOW) -- Authorities lifted an evacuation order for northwest Nebraska residents whose homes were threatened by wildfire.

Rocky Mountain Area Incident Management Team says smoke and flames from the so-called Douthigt and West Ash fires might be seen near the city of Chadron. Residents of Whitney southwest of Chadron, were told they could return home Sunday.

Officials say the Douthigt fire is nearly contained and charred about 47 square miles. The West Ash fire blackened more than 91 square miles Sunday night and was about half contained.

Evacuation orders remain in place for the Wellnitz fire, which crossed into South Dakota and burned more than 150 square miles in both states.

Thankfully, no injuries have been reported.
