NEW YORK (WKOW) -- Former football star Michael Strahan is Kelly Ripa's new co-host.
Strahan replaces Regis Philbin on the syndicated "Live! With Kelly" show, adding his name to the title. The former New York Giant is currently a host of "Fox NFL Sunday."
He was one of several men to get tryouts with Ripa as the show rotated several potential replacements since Philbin left last November. Philbin was the original "Live!" host for more than 28 years, with Ripa joining him in 2001.
Ripa announced the news Tuesday morning, with Strahan jogging in and picking his co-host up in a bear hug.
"LIVE! with Kelly & Michael" airs weekdays on WKOW-TV at 9:00 a.m.

The announcement will come on Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. on WKOW. Michael Strahan, who used to play for the New York Giants, has been a co-host guest a lot of times. There is speculation he will become Kelly's permanent co-host.
Back on November 21, 2011, "LIVE! with Kelly" debuted following the departure of longtime host Regis Philbin, and in the following months, 59 different men and women sat next to Kelly at the co-host desk, top personalities from every area of broadcasting and entertainment. One individual from that immensely talented group has been tapped to fill the job.
Stopping by as guests on Tuesday will be actress Claire Danes and 2012 "American Idol" winner Phillip Phillips, making his "LIVE" performance debut.
Emmy Award-winning talk show "LIVE! with Kelly" airs weekdays on WKOW-TV at 9:00 a.m.
