FITCHBURG (WKOW) -- Violent crime has been adding up in Fitchburg this summer -- a drug-related shooting, armed robberies, a child run over by his father, a child stabbed, and most recently -- an officer-involved shooting.

The latest investigation in Fitchburg is what police are calling a domestic homicide that happened early Saturday morning at an apartment building on Greenway Cross.

Fitchburg Police Lt. Chad Brecklin says authorities responded at about 4:30 a.m. to reports that a man was trying to force his way into a woman's apartment. When officers arrived on scene, they found a man with life-threatening injuries, and a short time later a woman who was also hurt. Police believe the victims knew their attacker.

"You have a potential ex-boyfriend who is no longer in a relationship with a female, and the altercation takes place with a new friend," says Brecklin.

The flight left one man dead, and the suspect-- Dominique Hale, 25, from Fitchburg, on the loose. Police believed he was traveling in a 2012 white Chevy Impala. They've since found the vehicle, but not Hale.

Neighbors like Jeremy Andreas, who has lived on Greenway Cross for two years, say the area has gotten worse over the past few years.

"When I first moved here you'd be lucky if you saw a cop car once a week. I bet you I see a dozen cop cars before lunch every day now," says Andreas.

Andreas says he does think the Leopold Neighborhood is safe, but he's concerned to hear about these crimes. But police reaffirm what they've been saying all summer-- they're seeing isolated crimes in a generally safe area.

Fitchburg Mayor Shawn Pfaff says officials are working together to improve neighborhoods. Since last year, the city has hired a new officer, increased patrols, and invested in construction projects, but Pfaff says they need help from the community, too.

"All this can't be done by government. Neighborhoods have to step up, neighbors have to step up, non-profits have to be part of this. So we're working really collaboratively," says Pfaff.

On Sunday, Fitchburg Christian Fellowship church-- right near the incident-- is hosting a family event, hoping to bring the Leopold Neighborhood together. Plus, on Tuesday night, the mayor and police officials will address these recent crimes at a neighborhood meeting at Leopold Elementary School at 6 p.m.
