UPDATE: Stoughton chemistry teacher burned during experiment

Posted:

STOUGHTON (WKOW) -- A chemistry teacher is home recovering after burning her hand during a science experiment at Stoughton High School.

Stoughton Area School District Superintendent Tim Onsager says the teacher was conducting a routine experiment to show how chemical reactions happen when a "flash" happened Monday morning.

Onsager says the teacher burned her right palm. She was treated and released from University Hospital.

Some students were showing signs of smoke inhalation and were taken to a local hospital as a precaution. Eventually the entire classroom of about 25 students was checked out at the hospital as a precaution. They have since been released to their parents.

The superintendent says there was no evacuation, and the smoke alarms didn't even go off.

Workers are cleaning the classroom. There was no damage.

Stoughton High School sent the following release to parents on Monday:

"At approximately 9 a.m. today, while conducting a chemistry experiment, a Stoughton High School chemistry teacher, was injured when the chemistry demonstration did not go as expected. EMS were called and provided appropriate medical assistance resulting in the teacher being taken to the hospital. All students in that chemistry classroom were evacuated and medically evaluated. The parents of those chemistry students have been notified. The chemistry classroom involved will not be used until the room can be properly cleaned and air quality in the room can be deemed safe. The remainder of the classes at Stoughton High School are continuing as scheduled. "
