UPDATE: Montee Ball assault suspects charged

MADISON (WKOW) -- Three UW-Madison students are charged with felony crimes in connection with the August 1 attack of Badgers football star Montee Ball.

Wendell Venerable, Robert Wilks and Deonte Wilson appeared in Dane County court on Monday. A Court Commissioner allowed previously established bail of signature bonds to continue.
A criminal complaint states Ball was kicked and punched on August 1 as he walked on University Avenue. Ball suffered a concussion and facial injuries from the attack. The complaint states a friend, UW-Madison student Christina Kukowski,  interrupted the attack when she threw herself over Ball.

The complaint states eyewitnesses linked the three men, all 21, to the attack through recognizing their clothing and features. The criminal complaint also states witnesses spotted the three men a short time later at the nearby Saxony apartments, and that the men were on surveillance video from the apartment complex's security system.

In the criminal complaint, police officials say Wilson originally told detectives he was in his apartment on the night of the attack, but later said he had been out drinking.

"What were his actions? I guess that'll work its way out in court," Wilson's attorney, Eric Schulenburg says.

The complaint states witnesses heard attackers refer to getting one of ten targeted football players. Police officials say the attack was apparent retaliation for a previous fight at a party, with football players as party guests, with Venerable hurt and briefly hospitalized.

Online university information indicates Venerable is on scholarship.

University policies allow for university discipline for off-campus conduct such as violent, felony crime, with penalties ranging from reprimand to expulsion.

Each student faces the charge of party to a crime of substantial battery. If convicted, the maximum sentence is just over three years in prison.
