Wisconsin Dairy News: Dairy Industry Person of the Year

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW)-- Dr. Sheila McGuirk has never been one to command the spotlight, but somehow it managed to shine on her this year.

McGuirk says, "It just gave me goose bumps, and I was kind of like speechless. Very honored. "Sheila is the 2012 Dairy Industry Person of the year. The World Dairy Expo award recognizes excellence for research, development, education, marketing, manufacturing, or other fields that provide goods or services to the dairy industry.

"I'm not big into the awards; that said, when you are recognized by peers and by people outside of your own profession, the feeling that gives you is almost indescribable," says McGuirk. For the past thirty years, Sheila has taught UW students about animal health and care. She even takes them to World Dairy Expo for a one credit course in Bio Security and Health Certificates of Cattle.

"My students and I start on Friday afternoon and we'll be the force that will be checking in cattle," says McGuirk. Whether it's checking in cattle or teaching the next generation of animal caretakers, Dr. Sheila McGuirk will remain an asset to Wisconsin's Dairy Industry. McGuirk says, "Obviously I made the right choice in 1983 to seek Wisconsin for my veterinary career."
