Henry Vilas Zoo welcomes two young capybara siblings

MADISON (WKOW) -- Henry Vilas Zoo is welcoming its newest members, two young capybara siblings from Canada.

Dane County Executive Joe Parisi announced the additions of the brother and sister on Tuesday.

"Our free Henry Vilas Zoo continues to grow, and continues to offer something for everyone year-round," said Parisi.

Henry Vilas Zoo worked with the Capybara Species Survival Plan (SSP) to relocate the young animals from Greater Vancouver Zoo in British Columbia, Canada and bring them to Madison.

The South America natives prefer to live around water because they like to hide underwater if in danger, with only their eyes and nose sticking above the water. Capybaras can stay fully-submerged under water for up to five minutes.

Capybaras can weigh up to nearly 150 pounds, making them the largest rodent in the world.

"We are very happy to have young capybaras back in our collection since they are such a favorite with zoo visitors," said Henry Vilas Zoo Director Ronda Schwetz. "Once they acclimate to their new surroundings, you will be able to see them during nice weather out in their yard."

The Henry Vilas Zoo is open everyday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"I encourage our residents and visitors to say hello to our new Capybaras at the zoo and enjoy the great stretch of weather we've got coming up," Parisi said.
