MADISON (WKOW) -- A Madison couple faces accusations of beating and lashing their children and it's something police say went on for years.
Authorities say two Madison parents are now facing tentative charges of child abuse.
Madison police say on Monday they were notified by Dane County Human Services about a possible child abuse case involving two teenage sisters. The mother and father are accused of abusing the older girls over the course of several years.
Officials say the teen girls and their two younger siblings were immediately removed from the home and placed in a safe environment.
"One of the girls actually ran from the house and after years of abuse...had decided it was time to tell somebody about what had taken place," said Madison Police Department PIO Joel DeSpain.
Madison police say the mother and father were arrested Thursday night on tentative child abuse charges.
According to Madison police, the father is 32 years old. He faces two counts of physical abuse of a child. The mother is 31 years old. She faces two counts of intentional physical abuse of a child and failure to act.
DeSpain said, "These beatings or lashings did cause injuries and they were told if they were ever seen with this injuries, to lie about how they occurred ."
Officials say the abuse included repeated lashings with a belt and with an electrical power cord. Madison police say the children were told to lie if asked about injuries caused by the "discipline."
