MADISON (WKOW)-- As part of the Fuel Up to Play 60 Program these elementary students are being rewarded with a football workout at the Hutson Center led by retired Green Bay Packers Running Back, Ahman Green.
And some of the adults in attendance are seeing the rewards of the program as well. Jeff Leopold, a physical education teacher at Horace Mann Middle School says, "Fuel Up to Play 60 has helped our students to find different ways to be active that interest them." But the program stresses more than just exercise. For many kids, interest in food doesn't go much beyond what and when they eat, but Fuel Up to Play 60 is changing that.
Parent, Daniel Johnston, says, "They're always concerned with how many servings they need of a particular food group. Elizabeth just asked me today how many serving do I need of milk, how many do I need of fruits and vegetables, so that's important for them." Fuel Up to Play 60 teaches kids healthy food choices such as fresh fruits and vegetables as well as milk and low-fat dairy products. And for parents that's a good thing. Kristin Schier, a parent of a child that goes to River Ridge Middle School says, "The portion size has cut back, it's not going for that chocolate snack, it's maybe the apple or the grapes."
Teachers and advisors have noticed a big change in students' behavior and activity as well. Schier says, "Somehow this program it gets instilled in their heads and they're excited about it. They don't want to let the school down, they don't want to let the community down, they're just really proud of it and they just want to be healthy active kids." Strength, fitness and healthy eating forever more!"
