DNR offers tours of possible new state recreation area

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW)- The Department of Natural Resources is moving forward with a possible new state recreation area. The DNR is inviting motorists to tour what might become a new state recreation area. It's located at the long-shuttered Badger Army Ammunition Plant.

The plant, located near Sauk City, closed in 1975. The Army has transferred 2,200 acres to the DNR and is expected to transfer another 1,600 acres to the agency. It's unclear when the final change-of-hands will take place, but the DNR has dubbed the property the Sauk Prairie Recreation Area and is developing a use plan for the property.

The DNR will allow motorists to take a free self-guided tour of the property on Saturday. Motorists can choose one of two tour routes. One path will take an hour and a half to finish. The other will take three hours.
