MADISON (WKOW) -- Wisconsin's freshman U.S. senator spoke to students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on Tuesday night.

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisconsin) focused on the growing role of the federal government in his talk at Chemistry Hall on campus.

Johnson says many people forgot or were never taught that the government isn't here to solve problems.

"As a result of that lack of knowledge, far too many Americans are willingly trading their freedoms and ours for a very false sense of economic security," said Sen. Johnson.

Johnson says 100 years ago, two cents of every dollar flowed through the government.

Now, Johnson said it's up to 24 cents of every dollar.
