Lake Michigan ferry in environmental battle

Posted:

MILWAUKEE (WKOW) -- The aging Lake Michigan ferry, S.S. Badger, is in the middle of an environmental battle.

Two Wisconsin Democrats, Rep. Jon Richards (D-Milwaukee) and Sen. Chris Larson (D-Milwaukee), asked the environmental protection agency not to extend a permit that allows the ferry to dump coal ash into Lake Michigan.

Governor Scott Walker has asked the EPA to temporarily extend it.

It's estimated the S.S. Badger dumps at least 500 tons of coal ash into the lake each season.
