Tips for a safe, happy Halloween

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- Youngsters will soon be out trick or treating and it's important to keep in mind safety tips.

The American Red Cross recommends costume safety. There are steps parents can take to keep their little ghosts and goblins safe in their Halloween costumes. The American Red Cross recommends using reflective tape to costumes and trick-or-treat bags, use flame-resistant costumes and use face makeup instead of masks.

Make sure to plan a route ahead of trick or treating, use a flashlight, only visit homes with a porch light on and only walk on the sidewalks.

If you're expecting trick-or-treaters at your door, make sure to keep the outdoor lights on, sweep leaves from sidewalks and steps and restrain pets.

Motorists should slow down, especially in residential areas, watch for children and use extreme caution when backing up vehicles.
