Cremated remains of 6 veterans to be buried

Posted:

SUPERIOR (WKOW) -- The cremated remains of six veterans kept at funeral homes in Superior for years will finally be buried this weekend.

The veterans, from World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, either had no family left or their families didn't have the money to bury them. So their remains have been kept at the funeral homes, some for more than 10 years.

Joe Penney, of Superior, says his friend died 11 years ago but has never been laid to rest. And when Penney learned there were five other Douglas County veterans who had not been buried, he led a fundraising effort to lay them to rest.

The Duluth News Tribune reports 125 businesses and individuals donated money to help bury the veterans. They will be buried with military honors Saturday at Greenwood Cemetery.
