UPDATE: 15-year Madison police veteran involved in shooting

MADISON (WKOW) -- Sources with knowledge of a burglary suspect who was shot and killed Friday by a Madison police officer tell 27 News the man is a musician and recording engineer.
Authorities say the man, in his thirties, was shot and killed after a confrontation with a police officer who responded to a burglary attempt on the 300-block of South Baldwin Street at 2:45 a.m. Friday.

Joel DeSpain, PIO for Madison police, says a couple with four children lived at the home where the intruder entered.

Madison police say a woman at the home called 911 and reported she could hear someone in the house. Officers responded to the home. Police say the first officer on scene saw two men struggling outside of the home. One of them then got into a physical confrontation with the officer. The officer repeatedly ordered the man to get down, but was shot by the officer during the confrontation. Madison police and paramedics performed life-saving measures on the suspect, but he died at the scene.

Sources say the man recently returned to Madison to work as a recording engineer on several music projects. Sources tell 27 News the man lived in the area of the shooting.
Sources describe the man as respected in the local music industry. Electronic court records indicate he has no apparent criminal history in Wisconsin.
"He has keys to our studio. We put everything we have in his hands. There's absolutely no way in my mind he would be involved in a criminal burglary, it must have been accidental," says Mark Whitcomb, who owns a Madison recording studio and has been a friend of the suspect for several years.
27 News is not identifying the man because authorities have not released his identity.

The officer who fired his gun is a 15-year veteran with the Madison Police Department, and has been placed on administrative leave. DeSpain says the officer, a man, and a woman officer were the officers on the scene. Neighbors tell 27 News they heard three gunshots at the time of incident.
"There were gun shots, so people are kind of confused at this point, really unsure why there was shooting happening," neighbor Taylor Anderson said.
DeSpain declines comment to 27 News on whether the suspect was armed, and whether less-lethal devices such as a taser were available to the officer who fatally shot the suspect.
