Veterans Day events

MADISON (WKOW) -- Veterans Day is on Sunday and there are many events in the area to honor our veterans.

The Department of Veterans Affairs is holding a trio of Veterans Day ceremonies around the state.

  • The first ceremony is set for Sunday morning at the agency's veterans home in Union Grove. The itinerary calls for remarks from DVA Secretary John Scocos and World War II veteran Wally Stenavich.
  • DVA also will put on a ceremony at the agency's veterans home in King on Sunday afternoon. Speakers will include Commandant Mary Hansen and Wisconsin Veterans Museum Director Michael Telzrow.
  • There is also a ceremony at the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery just south of Spooner Sunday afternoon. Cemetery Director Matthew Bergs and state Representative Nick Milroy, a Democrat from South Range, are scheduled to speak.

The Madison Veterans Council is sponsoring a Veteran's Day program at the Capitol.

  • The program is being held on the first floor rotunda at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.

In Darlington, the new Veterans Memorial will be dedicated.

  • The dedication is at 2 p.m. Sunday at Veterans Park. The guest speaker is David Kurtz, with the Wisconsin American Legion.

On Monday, the Fitchburg Senior Center will host a Veterans Day recognition.

  • The event is at 11 a.m. Monday. The Fitchburg Singers along with fifth- and sixth-grade students from Eagle School will provide music. Call 608-270-4290 for lunch reservations. Attendees are encouraged to bring an item to be donated to the local food pantry.

And as a reminder, all Federal offices will be closed on Monday. That means there will be no regular mail delivery that day.

There are many restaurants throughout the state of Wisconsin that are offering Veterans Day promotions. To view the list click here.
