MADISON (WKOW) -- Breast cancer awareness month ended in October. However, the fight to find a cure for breast cancer isn't over yet. Elishah Oesch introduces you to a woman who keeps up the fight, 365 days a year. Laura Richards is Someone You Should Know.
Kari Sievert has known Laura for 15 years. She works at the Wisconsin Well Woman Program. She says, "we provide pap tests and mammogram for lower income uninsured women." Kari says, under Laura's leadership, things have really taken off for breast cancer screenings and research. Kari says, " Laura is certainly dedicated and she's very persuasive. She has a way of working with people and making them feel comfortable."
Comfortable enough to give, and to encourage women get checked. Something that Laura says is vital to the health of all women. Laura says, "You have to be your own advocate. If you notice something not normal go out and get screened and get them early."
Both Laura and Susan G. Komen say, early decoction is the key. They say, every woman should be in a room like this getting a mammogram at age 40, or earlier if you have a family history. Laura says, "The key to early detection is that it open up more treatment options."And more treatment options, means a greater chance for survival. Which is the whole reason Laura is so passionate about this cause. Laura says, "You definitely know that some day, they are going to find it and its going to hopefully effect all cancers and not just breast cancer."
