Madison Common Council passes operating budget

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- The Madison Common Council has passed the 2013 operating budget.

The grand total comes to $267.1 million, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.

The council gave $1.75 million in funding to the Overture Center, even though Mayor Paul Soglin argued for a lower amount.

The council also voted in favor of an amendment that internalizes golf clubhouse operations. That means the city's golf pros will lose their positions.

The budget does not include a bus fare increase, which had been included in the initial form of the mayor's budget.

The budget will increase taxes by just over $50 on the average home in Madison.

Council members approved the $192.1 million capital budget early Tuesday morning.
