Breaking ground on Edgewater hotel renovation

MADISON (WKOW) -- After more than 70 years in downtown Madison, the Edgewater Hotel is getting a much needed facelift.

On Thursday, community leaders broke ground after spending five years hashing out the details. Developers will build a nine-story addition featuring 189 new rooms, 10 condos and several banquet rooms. The project also includes a gathering area featuring an outdoor ice skating rink.

"This project has been about bringing people together. I would argue in a lot of ways why we're standing here today and the success of this project is because of all the partnerships that were formed across the entire city, across the entire community," Madison Common Council Member Bridget Maniaci says.

The renovation will create 700 jobs. Developers say more than 250 will be permanent positions. They hope to finish the project by summer of 2014.
