MADISON (WKOW) -- The Madison Police Department is losing a valued member as he heads into retirement.
Ivan, the police dog is retiring Friday after more than five years of work for the Madison Police Department, and after saving Officer Henry Wilson from retiring himself.
Ivan spent his last day putting on a demonstration at UW-Madison's veterinary school...
Officer Wilson said it's a sad day, but that Ivan will be coming home with him to live out the rest of his dog days. Wilson says he's like one of his kids.
"He's like a child, although I know he's not a kid, but he's definitely part of the family," Wilson said. "Life changing dog, no doubt about it."
Ivan made a surprising recovery in October from a life-threatening infection, but he still takes medication for an inflammatory brain disease.
